Lisa Larson Birds Dish Ashtray part of 1960 THALIA series for Gustavsberg Sweden Studio Pottery Art Pottery Yin Yang $109.99

Vintage Bird Yin Yang dish part of Swedish designer Lisa Larson's 1960 THALIA series for Gustavsberg Sweden Studio Pottery. This was created as an "ashtray" but can be used for a variety of things. Although, I love the thought of the ashtray as a pice that she wanted people to come back to over an over again.
All of the Thalia Series are Inspired by images of the animal and human worlds. These darling birds sit in opposition in color and composition. I love the individuality of the two while still feeling like one statement. A Yin Yang homage if you will.
The piece has a wonderful feel in your hands. The shape is naturally pleasing and in line with the Scandinavian design aesthetic of organic modernism. The satin finish gives it a wonderful luminous glow and very "touchable" surface. The classic matte Mustard glaze is a hallmark of the series and fits wonderfully with a mid-century decor.
Stamped Gustavsberg with the Anchor makers mark.

Lisa Larson, born 1931, is a Swedish ceramic designer who started at Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory in 1953. She was hired by the famous Stig Lindberg who recognized and nurtured her gift for design. The Mid -Century modernist touch is apparent in many of her works.

The piece is free of cracks or chips. Any noticeable glaze flaws are part of the production process and considered appropriate to the individuality of the art form.
